ITALIAN media are reporting Sydney FC now loom as favourite to land superstar Alessandro Del Piero as negotiations reach their conclusion later today.
Gazzetto Dello Sport reported overnight that there is interest from Southampton, Spurs, Celtic and Braga for the Juventus and Azzurri great.
However, the Australian bid spearheaded by Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata and Lou Sticca from Tribal Sports Management has attracted “strong attention” from the Del Piero’s brother and agent, who is handling negotiations.
Del Piero himself will speak with the Sydney FC bid at 6pm tonight (Friday) in the Australians’ final attempt to lure one of the greatest ever footballers to the A-League.
It will be the fourth video conference that the pair will have given to the Del Piero camp – and the fact that they are still in the race for his prized signature is a good sign.
The Sydney FC offer has focused on Del Piero’s chance to put back into world football by joining a club in the A-League and providing the game in this country with a huge boost.
It also stresses living in an iconic tourist destination such as Sydney to play for a shorter season than in Europe as part of a whole package.
The fact that an A-League club is still being considered alongside football giants such as Spurs, Celtic and others is a huge feather in the cap of Sydney FC’s bid team and the club’s owners.
Pignata knows this could be the biggest deal ever in the A-League’s history and says he won’t die wondering as he gives it everything he’s got.
“Financially I think we’ve got a good offer, it might not be the best he’s ever seen but Alessandro can leave a footprint or a legacy if you will in Australian football for years to come,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com yesterday.
“What he can do for football in Australia, we’re hoping that it’s something that appeals to him.
“Del Piero is a huge name. You’ve got Beckham and Del Piero and other players on that level. I think from his nationality and the amount of people who follow Serie A I expected it to be big.”
During his time at Juve, Del Piero helped the club to win six Serie A crowns and a UEFA Champions League.
Over 19 years, Del Piero played 704 games for Juventus, scoring 289 goals. He also lifted the World Cup in 2006 after Italy knocked out the Socceroos on their way to the final.
Del Piero was named by Pele as one of the top 125 living footballers in the world.
“Il Pinturicchio” went out on a high, helping Juventus go unbeaten throughout the season to claim the Scudetto last May.
