Portsmouth's pre-season clash in Washington was marred by a series of problems that saw the team only arriving in the US capital on the morning of the match, and without their kit.

They were forced to take to the field in DC's all-white alternate strip - and last season's cash-strapped whipping boys of tle EPL were 2-0 down within 30 minutes thanks to strikes from Allsopp.

He scored the first with a header from the six yard box after 21 minutes, followed soon after by a goalmouth scramble that saw him side-foot home his second.

Pablo Hernandez scored DC's third while Allsopp secured his hat-trick with his final goal in the 65th minute for a final score of 4-0 amid some heavy tackles from the newly relegated Championship side - and plenty of controversial refereeing.

Two rival players were sent off for arguing with each other and DC's assistant coach was banished to the stand for confronting the officials at half-time while a DC United defender was dimissed in the dying moments of the game.

Afterwards MLS ref Jorge Gonzalez was criticised by both sides for his performance.

"An appalling performance from the referee -- appalling," said Portsmouth coach Steve Cotterill.

"I can't believe he's been allowed to officiate a game. I've never seen two players sent off for arguing -- arguing. They were probably six feet away from each other. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Appalling."

United's Curt Onalfo added: "I knew what [Portsmouth's] tactics would be -- they're in preseason, they're tired.

'Once we found our rhythm and started going at them, they decided to foul us on every other play, and that's the job of the referee to realize that. It's not that difficult to see."

Allsopp's hat-trick comes after he had previously scored just two goals in 12 MLS appearances for DC United.
