Melbourne City attacker Dario Vidosic says young gun Riley McGree has a lot to learn, but believes he is mature for his age.
McGree is on loan from Belgian side Club Brugge and continues to impress as one of the youngest journeymen in the A-League.
The teenager has started the last three games for City after coming off the bench in the derby and scoring the winner.
Vidosic has over 20 caps for the Socceroos, but has not represented his country since 2014. He felt McGree’s situation ahead of the Asian Cup could be similar to Daniel Arzani’s before the World Cup.
McGree is not part of Graham Arnold’s squad for the upcoming friendly against South Korea, but Vidosic believes he can make his Socceroos debut with consistent club performances.
“The one thing as an experienced player is you want to try help out the young ones,” Vidosic said.
“It was the same story with Arzani last year, I was speaking to him a lot. Riley is similar, he’s a very good player, but there’s a lot to learn and that’s the same as Daniel last season.
“At a young age, you have to continue working hard, keep your feet on the ground and strive to get better every day. There are still many sides of their game they can improve and that’s every single young player. He’s doing very well and hopefully he can be a big contributor for us.”
Vidosic added that the 19-year-old acted much older than his age.
“He’s been around for a while and has had a taste of being overseas,” he said.
“He knows how much work needs to be put in to stay there and he’s got a great chance here. He’s performed well so far and we just need him to continue.
“We rely on everyone in the squad, it’s a long season and we hope there’s no injuries, but it’s always part and parcel, there’s going to be injuries and suspensions and people out of form. We’ll need everyone throughout the whole season to get us all the way.”

City responded to their 3-0 loss to Sydney FC last week with a 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix at home on Friday night.
The Melburnians are yet to win an A-League title and Vidosic added the heartache from last season’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle Jets in the semi-final was still in the back of their minds.
“Every time as a professional, you go out wanting to win and be a champion,” Vidosic said.
“The one thing we have here is we can create history, so if we do it, we’ll be the first players of the club to do it and that’s edged in history and no one can take it from us.
“That’s something we’ve discussed throughout the preseason and we’ve set goals individually and collectively and definitely holding up that trophy would be unbelievable.
“We came close last season, we shot ourselves in the foot against Newcastle and we had a foot into the Grand Final, we played to hang on instead of playing our football like we did against them a few weeks before that and we won 3-0.
“It was a similar script that night, but we’ll use that as motivation this season and hopefully we can go one step further into the Grand Final and give ourselves a chance to win it.”
