Italian Gianni De Biasi confirmed Football Federation Australia have approached him about taking over from Ange Postecoglou as the new Socceroos boss.
Earlier this month Albania’s SuperSport website claimed De Biasi was being lined up as a possible replacement for Postecoglou if the Socceroos failed to qualify directly for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
De Biasi, 61 took football minnow Albania to the 2016 European Championships but resigned as manager of the Balkan country just last month.
Speaking to Albanian TV channel Supersport yesterday, the former Serie A manager said discussions remain on hold till after the Socceroos play their Asian World Cup qualifier against Thailand.
“A few days ago I met with the Australian national team and the decision about the coaching role will be taken after September,” he said.
“I had some other conversations, but as the team appears to be doing well I am still on vacation."
Supersport also reported that De Biasi was not the only candidate that the FFA had sounded out for the role, with the former Udinese manager one of three candidates that the governing body was speaking to.
De Biasi's tenure with Albania included a famous 1-0 win over Portugal in a Euro 2016 qualifier, and Albanian football journalist Ermal Kuka said the Italian was well regarded during his time coaching The Red and Blacks.
“He plays either a 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1 formation,” he said.
“De Biasi was loved by the fans and most players. During his time as coach he got Albanian citizenship. He said it made him feel more included in the mindset of the Albanian people and could understand the players better if he was one of us.
“He is an outstanding person. He is literate and not only football-wise. At the time, Albanian football needed such a person and we had great success with him.”
Under De Biasi Albania also reached their highest ever FIFA World Rankings, climbing 15 places to 38th in the world in mid 2015.
When contacted, FFA responded with: "Our focus right now is on supporting Ange and the Socceroos to qualify for next year’s FIFA World Cup finals.
"When it comes to succession planning for the Head Coach role, we’ll make an announcement at the appropriate time and of course we are being prudent to take into account any opportunities that we can explore in the meantime."
