Nigel de Jong has admitted that Netherlands collapsed after conceding a first-half equaliser in Sunday's Group B encounter against Portugal.
Oranje needed a two-goal win to have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages at Euro 2012, but eventually crashed out after a 2-1 loss, despite grabbing an early lead.
"After going up 1-0, I really had the feeling that we would score a second goal. However, we then conceded an easy goal and the team fell apart," De Jong told Algemeen Dagblad.
"Losing is obviously part of the game as well, but this shouldn't be happening to a World Cup finalist. I'm hugely disappointed, but don't want to say too much about it.
"I don't know what will happen now. We will have to pick up the pieces and see what happens."
Netherlands' next match is the international friendly against Belgium on August 15.
