STRIKER Lisa de Vanna’s broken leg has been the only downside to a promising Asian Cup for the Matildas who are just 90 minutes from qualifying for the 2011 Women's World Cup.
On Sunday, China defeated an under-strength Australia 1-0 in their final group B game. China topped the group after two wins and a draw with the Aussies in second spot.
The Matildas had already qualified for the semi-finals following two impressive victories against Vietnam and Korea Republic.
De Vanna went down after a second half clash with the Chinese goalkeeper and immediately signalled to the bench as she lay in agony at the Chengdu Sports Centre.
Her loss for Thursday's semi-final against either Japan or DPR Korea will be a blow but with Sam Kerr and Kate Gill, coach Tom Sermanni has the depth in his striking ranks.
Thus far, it's been an excellent tournament for the Australians despite Sunday's loss against the tournament hosts.
Not only has the youngish Aussie squad - with many taken from the W-League - shown great maturity, but coach Tom Sermanni has expertly shuffled his pack to combat the two-day turnaround for group games.
Now with four days to rest and recover, the strongest Aussie line-up - albeit almost certainly without de Vanna - will be available for selection for the semi-final.
Based on what's been seen so far, qualifying for the World Cup is within the Aussie girls' grasp. A win on Thursday will see the Aussies qualify for the 2011 World Cup in Germany and move into the Asian Cup final.
A loss and they'll need to win the do-or-die third versus fourth play-off to qualify for the German event.
Goalkeeper Lydia Williams was superb in Sunday's loss while Sydney FC striker Leena Khamis and defender Thea Slatyer have been rock solid for the green and gold.
