Here’s what a random selection of fans had to say in a straw poll 24 hours before the historic vote in Zurich and just hours before Australia’s final presentation…
Christina
“I’d love to think we would get it, but I don’t think we’re going to. If it was a fair fight, I think we’d get it. But it’s not going to be a fair fight. And I don’t think it’s a fair fight.
“Qatar is the one I’m worried about. And USA – money speaks a lot of languages.
“If we got it it would mean that the system works, that FIFA has done the right thing. If we don’t get it then they’re just after money – not the best thing for football, for the good of the game.
“I went to the South Africa World Cup and we’d put on an amazing World Cup. Frank Lowy should get a knighthood if we get it and he should be our next President.
John
“I think we have a reasonable chance, I’d say 60-40. I think we’ve got a very good representative in Frank Lowy and that will carry considerable weight for us. And we’ve proven in Australia we’re quite capable of hosting events like this.
“I’m not sure if the presentation will make much difference. I’d think most representatives would’ve made up their mind. If we didn’t get it I’d be disappointed but we knowing that we have some tough opposition.
“As for Qatar we know money-wise there is no object and what we’ve seen from the Arab states is they’re quite capable of doing some amazing things in the desert – if you’ve got the money to do it.”
David
“At the moment, our possibility of winning is low. Say 30-70 against. But if anyone’s going to pull it off, it’d be Frank [Lowy].
“Qatar would be a surprise if they do get up. It’d be good for Asia but if anyone from Asia was to win it should be Australia.
“Going into the bid process I thought we had a good chance and this bid was the best opportunity to showcase Australia to the world.
Ian
“I think we’ll get it. I think 60-40 in our favour. Why? Because we haven’t hosted it before and we’ve appeared at the last two World Cups and it’s good for the development of football.
John
“I’m reasonably optimistic about our chances. I’d rate it about 50-50. It’s the national sport in most if not all the countries in our time-zone in the AFC which is a potentially huge audience for us. I think we’re ideally positioned.
“The US have already had it so I think it’s probably down to us and Qatar. But in the end it’s usually about money and Asia’s a huge market. The only thing that might go against us is the time-zone with the US and European market.
“We’ve got a good chance and the best possible guy running the bid.
Marjorie
“I always see the cup half empty so I’m not so optimistic. I think it’s 40-60 against. I don’t think football’s got a hold in this country yet. I think it might go to Qatar - plenty money there.
Tim
“I’m not 100% sure but when you listen to Frank Lowy he gives you a lot of confidence. Based on that we’re a good chance. I’m very hopeful. But I’d still say it’s 50-50. There’s still the USA but if Qatar got it, it’d be an absolute joke of a World Cup.
“And I think it’s a joke they’ve done 2018 and 2022 together which has lead to problems with the [alleged] collusion.
Daniel
“I’m pretty nervous at the moment. But still confident. I don’t think the Oceania incident will help us but still confident.
“And I actually think it’s a good thing Elle McPherson is there. If Qatar got it I wouldn’t be happy. I don’t think they could host a world class event.
“We’ve got a lot of things going our way. I’d say 60-40 in our favour."
