Yokohama F. Marinos’ Socceroo Milos Degenek believes the J.League club will be chasing trophies after Ange Postecoglou’s appointment as their head coach on Tuesday.
Postecoglou has signed a multi-year deal to take over the Japanese outfit next year, following the resignation of Frenchman Erick Mombaerts.
The Marinos have won only one piece of silverware - the 2013 Emperor’s Cup – in the past 13 years, but are partly owned by the City Football Group and well supported with high expectations.
Postecoglou’s appointment comes after an improved campaign where the side finished the 2017 J.League season in fifth, having been 10th in 2016, and are in the Emperor’s Cup final four, with a semi-final date with Kashiwa Reysol on Saturday.
It was the Yokohama club’s best J.League finish in four years, when they were runners-up in 2013.
Degenek, who joined the Marinos in January and was named in the Young J.League Team of the Year, backed Postecoglou’s ambition.
“I think when you come here as a professional coach or footballer you always want to win the title,” Degenek told FourFourTwo.
“Knowing Ange, that’s what our main objective will be next year; to win a title with his style of football hopefully and lift a trophy at the end of the year which would be nice.
“You can’t plan a year in advance. You obviously want to go step by step, game by game and see how it goes, but he is ambitious.”
Degenek, who argued his side should’ve qualified for the 2018 AFC Champions League with a top three finish, said Postecoglou’s style would suit the Marinos.
The 23-year-old is in the unique position of knowing Postecoglou’s style first hand along with the Marinos’.
“Obviously we’re quite good at playing football,” Degenek said.
“We try to play out of the back and to foot, no long balls, we’ve been quite decent at it this year.
“Knowing the boss and the way we’ve played with the Socceroos, it’s been modern football.
“Hopefully we can elevate to another level when he comes in and brings his philosophy and we follow into that.”
Postecoglou handed Degenek his maiden Socceroos call-up and debut but the defender said the Australian’s appointment would unlikely afford him any favours.
“Obviously his appointment it gives me a bit of an extra boost knowing an Aussie is going to be there as well,” Degenek said.
“Then again, it’s football and he’s not going to look at me any different to other players.

“In football, there’s no favourites, you work hard and prove yourself. The benefit I have is that I know the boss already for two years.
“I’m grateful he’s going to be here and work with me again.
“I’m forever grateful to him for (my debut). I respect him a lot and think of him highly.
“I have a great football relationship with him, where we’ve had success with the Socceroos, achieving what we wanted. Our relationship will continue to build here.”
