SYDNEY FC are close to pulling off arguably the biggest-ever signing in the A-League with Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero considering joining the club on a marquee deal.
Italian sources have confirmed the move is close although Del Piero is also mulling over a potential move to Switzerland.
Sydney’s current marquee player Nicky Carle leaves for the UAE on a year-long loan move later this week where he'll link up with Baniyas SC.
This move by Carle opens up the possibility of Sydney FC bringing in a big name replacement.
Del Piero fits the bill perfectly being a superstar on and off the park.
During his time at Juve, Del Piero helped the club to win six Serie A crowns and a UEFA Champions League.
Over 19 years, Del Piero played 704 games for Juventus, scoring 289 goals. He also lifted the World Cup in 2006 after Italy knocked out the Socceroos on their way to the final.
Del Piero was named by Pele as one of the top 125 living footballers in the world.
“Il Pinturicchio” went out on a high, helping Juventus go unbeaten throughout the season to claim the Scudetto last May.
Del Piero’s farewell from the Juve supporters was one of the most emotional exits by any player in Italy overshadowing the final stages of their clash with Atalanta.
The 37-year-old Azzurri great indicated he wanted to continue playing and was linked with MLS and English club Watford.
Coincidentally Juventus were set to tour Australia in the off-season where Del Piero was set to play his final game for The Old Lady. However, the trip to Sydney was cancelled.
Now A-League fans may get a chance to see him play in a Sydney FC shirt in a signing that, if it comes off, would match that of Sydney's marquee signing Dwight Yorke in season one.
