Del Piero produced one of the finest individual performances in A-League history on Saturday night as Sydney FC ran riot, thrashing Phoenix 7-1 at Allianz Stadium.

It was the first time in his illustrious career he had scored four times in a match to help the Sky Blues to their biggest ever win and keep them in the hunt for the finals.

"I felt free in my mind today for sure, better than the other days," Del Piero said of his sublime performance.

"For sure it was a good day from the heavens. When you score four it's a good moment.

"I'm very happy not only for the four goals but because we played very good from first minute and we won a great game."

While the Sky Blues recent results had given them reason for optimism, no one could have predicted the type of display they produced to humiliate the Phoenix.

Their passing was crisp, their movement was quick and constant and their finishing was clinical.

Asked the catalyst for the side's turnaround in form, Del Piero said: "The last game (come-from-behind 2-1 win over Melbourne Heart) maybe something changed in our mind.

"When we are down 1-0 and we switched the game in the last few minutes it probably put some more energy in our minds and legs.

"We played with focus today, more focus than other games and I hope it's another step forward for our season."

Which is the message coach Frank Farina will desperately try and get across to his side this week.

The Sky Blues boss believes the huge win was a just reward for their hard work and fight over the last few weeks but stressed they had to keep it going, especially with a tough away clash with Melbourne Victory next weekend.

"Let's be realistic, it's just three points," Farina said. "Next week we go to Melbourne (Victory) so unless we continue to play like that, fight and work hard it means nothing."

While Del Piero stole the show, striker Joel Griffiths was superb on his debut scoring a goal and giving the Phoenix defence problems all match.

"He did quite well. That's his game, he's aggressive, competes well, fights for every ball and he makes some good runs," Farina said of the former Newcastle Jets man.

"He will get better as we go as well and we need him to continue on like that."
