Melbourne Victory have squandered a golden opportunity to push up to second on the A-League ladder after being held 1-1 by a depleted Perth Glory at AAMI Park on Friday night.
Both goals were scored in the first half in a a frustrating night for Kevin Muscat's men who wasted a host of opportunities.
Andy Keogh drew first blood for the visitors (17') before Besart Berisha (41') restored parity on the cusp of half-time.
The result sees both teams hold their positions on the table with Victory third (and a game in hand), Glory 5th and the rest of the round still to play.
Victory welcomed back first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas after missing last week’s game with a broken finger, while Daniel Georgievski remained on the bench after returning from a collarbone injury.
Glory went into the match unbeaten in their past six games against Victory. But a shock loss to Central Coast Mariners last week - and shorn of key players such as the injured Diego Castro, Josh Risdon and suspended Rhys Williams - had Victory as the red-hot favourites going into the encounter.
And it was the home side with all the early running,
Besart Berisha and Marco Rojas both had good chances to get on the scoreboard before Keogh rifled home the opener against the run of play. The Irishman again proved to be the nemesis of Victory slamming in his 5th in five games against the Melbourne outfit.
Nebojsa Marinkovic unleashed Chris Harold down the right flank who cut it back to Keogh, the forward completing the move with a sizzling strike into the top left corner. It was Keogh's 7th goal this season, puttiing him joint top of the Golden Boot race.
It was only a matter of time before the home side were back on level pegging. And Victory almost replied instantly as Berisha had a chance straight in front of goal but a tame shot allowed Liam Reddy to claim.
Reddy then came close to gifting an equaliser to the Victory in the 34th minute after his clearance found James Troisi whose poor control saw the ball land for Rojas, the Perth goalkeeper redeeming himself with a diving save.
The home side levelled the scoring with four minutes remaining to half time, when Rojas’ cross skimmed past Glory defender Dino Djulbic leaving Berisha to fire from point blank range his fifth goal of the season.
At the 54th minute Jason Geria’s low cross went wide leaving Fahid Ben Khalfallah to chase with a final sliding shot going just wide of the post.
Victory defender Alan Baro almost got a collector’s item three minutes later after a bulleted shot from long range forced Reddy to tip the ball over the crossbar.
An extraordinary goal-line clearance by Glory's Brandon Wilson denied Fahid Ben Khalfallah’s with 22 minutes remaining.
The Victory continued to surge forward, with wave after wave of attack. Troisi’s pinoint cross to substitute Jai Ingham could’ve won the game, but his powered shot skewed wide. Troisi had a last minute chance to steal three points for Victory but his final shot struck the post.
Victory travel to ANZ Stadium next week to meet the floundering Western Sydney Wanderers while Glory meet Newcastle Jets at home.
