VPL WRAP: Northcote City have set up a blockbuster finals-deciding clash against South Melbourne as the minor premiership remains undecided after Oakleigh beat Hume City.
Green Gully Cavaliers 4 (Jason Hayne (2), Graham Hockless, Mathew Sanders)
Victorian Training Centre 0
@ Green Gully Reserve
GREEN Gully Cavaliers have moved back into the top five after a comprehensive 4-0 win over Victorian Training Centre.
A brace from the in-form Jason Hayne and Graham Hockless and Mathew Sanders strikes were enough to secure the three points despite a sloppy performance.
It extended VTC’s losing run to eight.
Green Gully Cavaliers 2 (Jason Hayne, Jeffrey Fleming)
Springvale White Eagles 0
@ Green Gully Reserve
GREEN Gully have secured a finals spot with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Springvale White Eagles.
A first-half penalty from Jason Hayne and a Jeffrey Fleming screamer have guaranteed a top five spot for the reigning champions.
Springvale defender Daniel Paunov was sent off after fouling forward Mathew Sanders as he earned the Cavaliers a penalty, converted by Hayne.
Despite creating several opportunities in the second half it took a rare, and stunning, strike from captain Fleming to seal the points on 69 minutes.
The White Eagles have lost nine games in a row while Green Gully will be hopeful of securing a top three finish to get a finals double chance.
Dandenong Thunder 0
South Melbourne 1 (Jesse Krncevic)
@ George Andrews Reserve
A GOAL from Jesse Krncevic was enough to end Dandenong’s finals dream as South Melbourne registered a 1-0 win.
Thunder were still in the hunt for a top five spot despite a six-point deduction earlier in the season.
But striker Krncevic put an end to those hopes with a first-half header as South set up a blockbuster final round meeting with Northcote.
A draw for South at Port Melbourne on Sunday will be enough, while City can pinch the last finals spot with a win.
Hume City 0
Oakleigh Cannons 2 (Frankie Lagana, Hayden Doyle)
@ Broadmeadows Valley Park
OAKLEIGH Cannons kept the race for the minor premiership alive with an impressive 2-0 win over Hume City.
The Cannons found the net once in each half through Frankie Lagana and Hayden Doyle to move level on points with Hume atop the table.
City still hold a better goal difference so a win at Melbourne Knights on the last day will be enough to clinch top spot.
The loss was Hume’s third on the trot in the league and is a worrying sign ahead of the finals.
Richmond 1 (Mate Eterovic)
Melbourne Knights 0
@ Kevin Bartlett Reserve
A LATE goal from Mate Eterovic has kept Richmond’s slim hopes of playing finals football alive after a 1-0 win over Melbourne Knights.
Eterovic struck in the 80th minute as last year’s runners-up moved within two points of fifth place, although they will need results to go their way if they are to qualify for the finals.
Their late season charge has seen them collect six wins in a row, likely to be extended to seven when they visit St Albans on the final day.
Northcote City 3 (Adriano Chiappetta, Glen Trifiro, Dean Piemonte)
Bentleigh Greens 0
@ John Cain Memorial Park
NORTHCOTE City recorded the most important win of the round with a 3-0 victory over Bentleigh Greens.
It took until the last 23 minutes for Northcote to break the game open as Adriano Chiappetta, Glen Trifiro and Dean Piemonte netted against the Greens.
The win put Northcote into fifth, although Heidelberg have a game in hand, and they will need to beat South Melbourne on Sunday to qualify for the finals for the second season in a row.
Heidelberg United 4 (Saso Alexovski, Hamlet Armenian, Sean McIlroy, Les Doumbalis)
St Albans Saints 1 (Daniel Visevic)
@ Olympic Park (Village)
HEIDELBERG United started their easy run home with a 4-1 win over St Albans Saints.
United face VTC and Springvale White Eagles who, along with the Saints, are the bottom three.
Saso Alexovski, Hamlet Armenian and Sean McIlroy found the net in the first half to give Heidelberg a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Les Doumbalis added another before Daniel Visevic’s late consolation goal.
If United win their last two games – as expected – they are likely to finish in third because of their superior goal difference, although they could yet win the minor premiership.
