Andrija Kaluderovic had given the Phoenix a 2-0 first-half lead but Victory hit back, leaving Wellington in last and three points behind their nearest rival.

The club has only collected five points from their first eight games and have conceded 20 goals.

Coach Darije Kalezic, who took over in the off-season, is now under pressure but Durante insisted their poor run wasn't through a lack of trying.

"You can see that the players are giving everything," Durante told Fox Sports.

"It's not from a lack of trying. It's just not happening at the moment.

"It's extremely frustrating for the players. At home we're not winning games. It's not good enough.

"I feel for the fans. We're hurting as a team, as a club, but we can turn it around. There's plenty of points to go."

Victory responded with second-half goals from Besart Berisha, a Goran Paracki own goal and James Troisi's late winner.

"In the second half, I thought it was fairly even," Durante said.

"There wasn't much happening. They took their chances really well.

"In the first half I thought we were strong. We had a gameplan to be aggressive, on the front foot, put them under pressure and win second balls. We did that.

"I'm a little bit lost for words at the moment as it's frustrating for the fans and frustrating for the players." 

Wellington are next in action away to Brisbane Roar on Saturday.
