The 22-year-old Korea-based central defender had been initially invited to the Socceroos squad for the two games, before a small hamstring tear suffered in K-League action in late August prevented him from taking his place.

The call-up would have been DeVere's first in almost a year, having been part of the squad for the third round World Cup qualifiers against Thailand and Saudi Arabia in early September last year.

Speaking to au.fourfourtwo.com, DeVere admitted the missed opportunity was disappointing but remained hopeful of being part of the Socceroos squad which needs a lift on the road to Brazil 2014 after a poor start to final round qualifying.

“Any injury is never good but in this particular case it was a bit more inconvenient for me,” DeVere said.

“I would have liked to have been involved again. It's always a good experience to go into the camps and get that experience and be around the team.”

When pressed on whether he felt opportunities might open up for him given Australia's qualifying struggles and coach Holger Osieck's promise of changes, the uncapped DeVere was diplomatic.

“It'd be a great honour to represent my country one day. At this stage it's all about the players chipping to help us qualify for Brazil,” he said.

“If I can play a part in that and help the team in some way I'd be delighted and it'd be an honour. Hopefully in the future an opportunity comes up again.”

On Australia's final round qualifying campaign, he added: “It probably hasn't gone how people had liked for us to start but we've had some tough games away from home. Everyone's done their best, but it's not gone their way. In saying that, there's still plenty of time and plenty of games to pick up points to qualify for Brazil.”

DeVere added that his hamstring injury had been progressing well and said he hoped to be back in K-League action for next weekend.

That news is a huge positive for his club Gyeongnam FC where he has impressed as a regular in the centre of defence after recovering from a knee problem early in the year.

“I took a bit of time out earlier in the year to get my knee right,” he said. “Since then I've played every game for the club. I've been trying to get consistency back in my game.”

On his form, he added: “It's been good. At the very least it's been consistent. I feel I've started to get that consistency in my game over the past few weeks. The team has been performing well which helps and it's been a good couple of months.”

Indeed, Gyeongnam squeezed into the top eight of the K-League before the mid-season split, meaning they've avoided a relegation battle while they will play in the Korean FA Cup final against Pohang Steelers on October 20, with the winner claiming a spot in the 2013 AFC Champions League.

“If we can win that it will guarantee us a spot in the ACL. It's something which hasn't happened at this club before so everyone's excited about the opportunity of that and looking forward to that,” said DeVere, who has a year to run on his Gyeongnam contract.

DeVere previously made it clear when he moved from Brisbane Roar to Korea, he hoped to use Gyeongnam as a springboard to Europe, while he has also been linked with moves to top K-League clubs this season too.

However, the Melbourne-born defender was cool on discussing any potential moves, stating he received “nothing really concrete” from top K-League clubs despite the speculation and insisted he's focused on Gyeongnam.

“I'm just looking to concentrate on what I can do at Gyeongnam and help them do the best I can for this club. If things pop up in the future that's something I'll look at,” he said.

However, he admitted the success of players such as Koo Ja-Cheol, Ji Dong-Won and Ki Sung-Yueng in moving from the K-League to top European clubs in recent times gave him hope.

“A lot of clubs throughout Europe are starting to look more towards Asia than they have in the past, whether it be Korea or Japan. There's always opportunities if you're performing well,” he said.
