Bayer Leverkusen relinquished a three-goal advantage this evening to lose 4-3 after extra time to Dynamo Dresden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
Last season's Bundesliga runners-up looked to have the tie in the bag when they found themselves three up five minutes into the second half thanks to goals from Eren Derdiyok, Sidney Sam and Andre Schurrle.
However, second division Dresden had other ideas. They got back on level terms through goals from Sebastian Schuppan and Robert Koch (two) to force extra time and then Alexander Schnetzler grabbed the winner in the 117th minute.
Werder Bremen also crashed out, going down 2-1 at Heidenheim.
It all seemed to be going to plan for Bremen when Markus Rosenberg put them ahead in the 33rd minute, but two goals in three minutes - from Christian Sauter and Marc Schnatterer - turned the game on its head in the early stages of the second half.
Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund had no such worries, cruising to a 3-0 triumph at Sandhausen courtesy of goals from Robert Lewandowski (two) and Shinji Kagawa.
Augsburg, newly promoted to the top flight, were given a stern test but eventually booked their place in the second round with a 2-1 extra-time win at Oberhausen.
Paul Verhaegh got the visitors back level after Christopher Kullmann had given the hosts a 24th-minute lead, before Jonas De Roeck's goal in the last minute of extra time sealed a dramatic victory for Augsburg.
Hamburg were also made to work hard for their place in round two, Mladen Petric notching the winner 18 minutes from the end after they had seen Heiko Westermann's opener cancelled out by Sebastian Ferrulli in the first half.
Markus Feulner grabbed a first-half hat-trick as Nurnberg came from behind to win 5-1 at Arminia Bielefeld.
Tim Jerat had given Arminia a 17th-minute advantage but Feulner's treble put the visitors firmly in control before the break, and further strikes after the interval from Robert Mak and Tomas Pekhart sealed an emphatic away win at Schuco Arena.
Kaiserslautern also enjoyed a convincing win on the road, with goals from Ivo Ilicevic, Christian Tiffert and Thanos Petsos securing a 3-0 triumph at BFC Dynamo.
Elsewhere, American midfielder Matt Taylor scored a hat-trick as second division Paderborn stormed to an amazing 10-0 win at Rot Weiss Ahlen, while 2011 runners-up Duisburg won 2-0 at Babelsberg.
