The club are believed to have scooped around £9 million for the Belgium international and will look to strengthen their own squad following a tough season. 

"Our aim is to build a competitive squad for the new season and this (Mignolet) deal will give us further ability to strengthen the side," Di Canio told The Guardian. 

"I would like to assure our fans that there is a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes."

The Italian, who replaced Martin O'Neill towards the end of last season, has already brought in four players in this transfer window. 

French defender Modibo Diakite and Valentin Roberge, along with midfielder Cabral, have all joined on free transfers.

They were followed in by 19-year-old Swedish winger David Moberg Karlsson, who made the switch from IFK Goteborg last week.
