Ahead of Wednesday night’s blockbuster FFA Cup semi-final against Sydney FC, South Melbourne star striker Milos Lujic believes they have the form to cause an upset
After a couple of seaons of false starts, South are in the final four of the FFA Cup for the first time with a dream home tie against A-League opposition.
Their 2017 FFA Cup run comes on the back of two impressive victories: a 4-1 win against Sorrento in Round 16 followed by a 6-0 thrashing of Gold Coast City in the quarter-final.
It’s a far cry from the early rounds which saw South on the brink of elimination after by NPL 2 side Dandenong City and needing a last gasp goal to edge out Edgeworth Eagles.
But Lujic, who netted three goals in the 5-4 comeback against City and the late winner against the Eagles in the round-of-32 believes that come Wednesday night, South will be all guns blazing.
“We’re glad that the last few games have been pretty easy games in terms of results because we were getting sick of winning the game in the 90th minute and extra time,” he said speaking exlusievly to FourFourTwo.
“But in the last month or so we have been gelling quite well and our form has been very, very good. That’s why our confidence is quite high.
“So, we’re going to try and hang in there for as long as we can and hopefully at the end of the day we could sneak a result. It would be great for our club that’s for sure. “

Since the FFA Cup’s inception, there have been occasions where NPL teams have shocked A-League sides.
However, South coach Chris Taylor said that the former NSL powerhouse will be up against a fit and highly conditioned Sydney FC.
“The upsets have happened when the NPL clubs are in season and the A League clubs are out of season,” he said.
“We are now faced with the opposite. We’re out of season and Sydney have played the first game of the season before they face us.
"They’re fully geared and fully primed and running at their capacity. So that makes this challenge even harder. So, we’re under no illusions that this will be very, very difficult.
“But you know, if we play anywhere near as well as we did last round, then we could put up a good show”

Meanwhile South Melbourne A-League chairman Bill Papastergiadis, believes an upset over the Sky Blues is possible.
“That would be a dream come true, no doubt about it,” he said.
“A 10,000 crowd at Lakeside, chanting strongly in South’s favour would be not only good for South, but good for football in this country because we’re adding another dimension to the football landscape and that can only be good for us.
“It will be a difficult game, no doubt about it. We need to be honest about the discrepancy between our playing budget and theirs.
“But the club will give it its best. It’s committed to bringing its best possible team onto the pitch.”
