VPL WRAP: Green Gully have booked a place in the grand final for the second-straight year, despite coach Lubo Lapsansky resigning days before their clash against Hume City.
Ian Dobson led the Cavaliers in the 3-0 major semi-final win over Hume after Lapsansky tendered his resignation on the Thursday leading up to Saturday's game.
The former National Soccer League championship-winning coach replaces Lapsansky, who the club says cited business interests as the reason for his resignation.
Dobson, who was the technical director of coaching at the club while Lapsansky was head coach, was also alongside Paul Harris when Gully won the title last season.
Gully were too polished for Hume with goals from Joel Nikolic, Mile Medjedovic and Mathew Sanders putting them through to the decider at AAMI Park on September 3.
Nikolic, returning from two serious injuries, scored his first goal of the season with a header from a Graham Hockless corner 10 minutes in.
Gully goalkeeper Nikola Roganovic twice denied Hume with strong saves to start the second half.
Roganovic hasn't conceded in a league clash for 655 minutes, dating back to the 4-0 loss to Hume on June 25.
Gully defender Medjedovic poked in after a goalmouth scramble in the 80th minute, before Sanders sealed a grand final spot in stoppage time.
With Hume goalkeeper Lupce Acevski adding an extra number in attack for a corner, Gully's swift counter-attack led to Sanders placing into an empty net at the other end.
Hume City still have a second chance and will meet Oakleigh in the preliminary final for a place at AAMI Park.
It comes after a late goal from Craig Goodwin helped the Cannons to a 1-0 win over arch-rivals South Melbourne in the minor semi-final.
Oakleigh's Hayden Doyle forced South shot-stopper Zaim Zeneli into a strong save in the best effort of the first half.
As the game looked headed for extra time, late substitute Goodwin came on to fire home what proved to be the winner in the 89th minute.
