Doll replaces Jurgen Rober, who resigned on Monday after eight games in charge.

Rober's final game at the helm was on Saturday when Dortmund turned in a woeful display in a 2-0 defeat at Bochum.

Doll, who has signed a contract through to the end of next season, takes over with the club in 13th place in the table and just a point clear of the relegation zone.

The 40-year-old has recent experience of the lower reaches of the Bundesliga, however, after his spell with Hamburg.

Former Germany international Doll led the north German club into this season's Champions League but their 2006-07 domestic campaign was dismal.

Indeed, when he was fired in February, Hamburg had just one Bundesliga win on the board.

Dortmund's first choice to replace Rober was Felix Magath but the former Bayern Munich boss turned down the offer of managing the Westfalenstadion club.
