The Dons sealed their place in the last 32 of the competition with a stunning 4-0 triumph over FC Copenhagen last night.

Their reward was a fixture against the German giants, who they beat 3-2 in the quarter-finals of their triumphant European Cup Winners' Cup run of 1983.

And Calderwood insists his side are not overawed at the thought of facing Ottmar Hitzfeld's team.

He said: "It's not a fear thing, you have got to respect them, they are a massive name in European football.

"It's a wonderful challenge for the lads. When the draw was made, the lads were jumping up and down so they were well pleased."

The Germans will return to Pittodrie on February 13 or 14 for the first leg and the Aberdeen boss is already counting the days following the famous win over the Danes.

Jamie Smith's superb double within 10 minutes of the second half kicking off lit up a sold-out Pittodrie and the Dons fans were in dreamland following an own goal from Mikael Antonsson and Richard Foster's late strike.

"It was wonderful last night at Pittodrie - I have never seen it like that," Calderwood said.

"A lot of people who have been here many years said they hadn't seen it like that in the great times.

"It was fabulous, that was like Christmas come early, it was a wonderful, wonderful atmosphere.

"We just want more of it. I know it's two months away, Bayern, but it really can't come quickly enough."

Calderwood is delighted Aberdeen's 'Red Army' will be rewarded for their support with a glamour trip, after about 6,000 watched them lose at Atletico Madrid.

"The great thing about Bayern is... they have a great stadium," he said.

"We have got a wonderful travelling support, as we saw in Madrid, and it's quite easy to get to.

"I'm sure the websites will be busy now with people trying to get to Munich and they can accommodate them, which is very important."

Jamie Langfield added to the feelgood factor at Pittodrie this morning by extending his contract for three years beyond the summer.

And Calderwood is hoping to prolong Birmingham winger Sone Aluko's loan deal past January.

New Blues boss Alex McLeish has cleared Aluko to stay at his former club for the rest of the season, and Calderwood will give the teenager time to decide his short-term future.

"I spoke to big Alex at the beginning of the week and he has no problem with Sone staying," Calderwood told RedTV.

"I told Sone and he seems very positive.

"He will go home to talk to his parents. We have got to remember he is only 18 years old, coming to a new country.

"Luckily enough, it's the same language but it is a big step for him.

"But the kid has done brilliantly. Hopefully he will want to stay.

"I've not had any signs saying he doesn't. Sone will get the final decision in a couple of weeks."

With the choice of a double header against Bayern Munich or a return to Birmingham's reserves, there could be more good news in the offing for Calderwood.
