WALES' youngsters have been urged to make the most of a big opportunity against Croatia on Sunday when a long list of absentees will open the door for fringe men to feature in John Toshack's side.
Wales will travel today with an 18-strong squad that includes four members of the current Wales Under-21 group in Neil Taylor, Mark Bradley, Christian Ribeiro and Hal Robson-Kanu.
Captain Craig Bellamy yesterday became the latest withdrawal from manager Toshack's squad, with the Manchester City striker ruled out by a calf muscle injury.
He joined the likes of Simon Davies, Danny Gabbidon, Ched Evans, Andy King, David Cotterill and James Collins in missing the trip.
Toshack is also without players involved in Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship play-off final at Wembley between Cardiff and Blackpool, while Jack Collison, Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen are confirmed non-starters.
"I remember when we went to the USA a few years ago that quite a few dropped out," said Wales goalkeeping coach Paul Jones, who won 50 caps for his country.
"It's always difficult at the end of the season. It is tough, but we have got a group here to work with and a chance for them to shine.
"We will make the most of what we have got. Yes, we are missing quite a few, but we get on with it.
"We are looking to have a run-out, and then come August, start again and hopefully with quite a lot of the lads back.
"It's just the way it has happened. It will be a tough game, but an opportunity for the boys and a great experience."
Bellamy was overlooked for the last fixture against Sweden in March despite being fully fit, prompting speculation about the player's international future.
Toshack refused to confirm whether his talismanic striker would return for the next competitive fixtures in the autumn.
Jones added: "I think Craig had a twinge in his back the last couple of games with Manchester City, so he did a little bit of extra training, but unfortunately his calf tightened up.
"It's one of those situations. It's not worth maybe tearing something.
"Craig turned up, and we all had a chat with him, the staff and that.
"John made the decision that with it needing a couple of days for it to settle down and then travelling, we said, 'Leave it, not a problem'.
"Hopefully, Craig will have a good pre-season and be fit and raring to go in August."
