Table-toppers the Jets meet the defending champions the Sky Blues at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.

Newcastle are on a high after an unbeaten start to the A-League season, while Sydney FC is recovering from a surprise loss to Central Coast Mariners.

The Sky Blues went down 2-0 to the Mariners thanks to goals from Andrew Hoole and Jake McGing.

“I guess it shows that they’re not invincible,” Duncan told FourFourTwo.

“We’ve got to have the belief that, although they’ve got good form at home, but we can go down there and get a positive result. If we play our football and play to the best of our ability then hopefully we can do that.

“Absolutely Sydney FC are the benchmark of the A-League. Last season they lost the FFA Cup final, they lost to Western Sydney and then lost on the weekend, three losses in a year and whatever. That definitely sets the benchmark.

“They’re a fantastic team, they’ve got fantastic individual players and I’m sure they’ll be looking to respond to the loss on the weekend. We have to be ready for that and we’ll be up for that. It should be a good game.”

The Jets have notched four wins and two draws after six rounds under new coach Ernie Merrick this season.

It is a far cry from the 2016/2017 campaign where a Mark Jones-led Newcastle collected the wooden spoon.

Duncan said the club is confident going forward and will outscore their opponents in most matches. Already the Jets have banged in 15 goals in just six matches.

“That’s probably something the manager has brought in with him that we’ve got to score goals in probably every single game we play in,” the goalkeeper said.

“It’s up to the boys at the back – myself, Nigel and Nikolai – to be our best. We’ll probably outscore most teams in most games, so it’s not always going to be cleansheets because we play a very attacking brand of football.

“But I think the fans enjoy it and hopefully we can win as many games as possible.”
