UNDER-PRESSURE Melbourne Victory coach Mehmet Durakovic admits Sunday's 2-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix was a big relief although he says his side were only okay.
Victory's star-studded side came into Sunday's game without a goal and without a win, but broke their duck thanks to talisman Archie Thompson's first-half strike, before he won the penalty for the second.
Durakovic, who has insisted once Victory get their structure right the goals will flow, admitted breaking their duck was welcome relief for him.
"We just held up, held up and finally we scored, so it was a big relief," Durakovic told Fox Sports after his side came under much pressure from Wellington in the first-half.
He added: “I thought we did OK, although our first half wasn't the best.
"We knew they'd come at us, the boys held up quite well and we managed to score, so it wasn't a bad performance."
However, Victory's next test is against champions and early runaway leaders Brisbane Roar.
Victory captain Adrian Leijer said: "Brisbane are doing very, very well but we're confident. We played them last season, and we did well against them, we beat them in pre-season.
"Friday night (Brisbane's 7-1 win over Adelaide) was an unbelievable display by them, we'll really have to work at our game and lift our game from tonight. We know they're the team to catch, and we'll be doing everything we can to put in a good performance next weekend."
Meanwhile, Wellington coach Ricki Herbert said his side was made to pay for missed chances.
“We are playing well and I don’t think anyone could have begrudged us two or three goals by half-time,” Herbert said.
“We are having to get by with a small squad and the people who put the ball in the back of the net cost more money than other players.
“Unfortunately we aren’t in a position to get someone like that. I would be more worried if we weren’t creating chances and even with 10 men we looked likely. I believe we are playing some of the best football in the four-year history of the club.”
Nix captain Andrew Durante was disappointed by the defeat and a Victory side he labelled “poor”.
“Melbourne were poor, we were very good and I’m still working out how we got nothing from the game,” he said.
“We are playing some really good stuff. We were well on top and forced them into errors.”
