EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Victory have built an exciting squad for the new W-League season adding powerful Laura Spiranovic to the mix with the Victorian goal-machine poised to play against Glory on Saturday.
The prolific 19-year-old sister of Socceroo Matt is a newcomer to the W-League.
The recently crowned Victorian WPL Golden Boot and Player of the Year now makes the step up to the big time and could start alongside Jodie Taylor in Saturday’s season opener against Perth Glory.
And with the return from an Achilles injury of Birmingham City’s English striker Taylor, a dangerous strike duo looms large for Victory.
“I’m really impressed with Laura,” Taylor told au.fourfourtwo.com on Thursday. “This is the first time I’ve seen her play.
"She’s a really strong forward and we link pretty well together considering we’ve never played together before.
“She’s powerful and can score inside and outside the box with both feet. She’s quite dynamic.”
Spiranovic told au.fourfourtwo.com that the last few months in her life have been memorable as the accolades have flowed her way.
However training five times a week while studying at University and working is a big commitment - but it’s one the striker is up for.
“The level is definitely higher [then the Victorian WPL] with the pace and quality," she said. "It took a while to adapt but as you train, you adapt.
“This is a big commitment. You have to be dedicated - it’s for the love of the game.”
Victory retained a core group of players from last season and also feature six Young Matildas who arrived back this week from national team duty in Vietnam.
Thursday’s session was all about assessing the match fitness of the group as coach Vicki Linton pondered her starting line-up for Glory.
“The team’s buzzing,” added Taylor. “It’s a very young team but with players having that extra year’s experience from last year, I’m really excited to see them play.”
One of those returning Young Matildas is Brianna Davey – one of the most exciting young keepers to have emerged in many years.
Playing three times last season as a 15-year-old, the youngster now gets a chance to carve her own name in the side following the somewhat surprising exit of Matildas captain and shot-stopper Melissa Barbieri.
Victory coach Vicki Linton said it was Young Matilda Davey’s time to shine.
“She’s exceptional and I’m excited to see how she goes," she said. "I’ve got complete confidence in her.
“I wasn’t an easy decision [to let Barbieri go] but it’s been a while now and we’re really focused on what we have here and the game on Saturday."
Victory sneaked into the W-League top four last season but all the talk this time around has been about star recruits and overseas coaches at Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets, Canberra and reigning Premiers, Brisbane Roar.
“We snuck under the radar last year, and if they [the media] aren’t talking about us this year I’m happy with that. We’ll just get on and do our business,” said Linton.
“And we’ve been pleased with how Laura’s come in. She’s got some great attributes, she’s powerful and quick and is a true striker.
“She’s got a great attitude to learn but I guess it’s just about getting those combinations and reading the game that little bit better and maybe adjusting her runs.”
Victory kick-off their W-League season at 5pm on Saturday against Perth at the Veneto Club while their A-League side face Melbourne Heart at 7.45pm at Etihad Stadium.
Linton added: “The fact that we’ve got the core group of players from last year and the brand of football we played makes me excited about what we can achieve this season."
