Edgeworth striker Daniel McBreen says his team believe they can spring an upset and knock Western Sydney out of the FFA Cup when the two sides meet in the round of 16.
The Wanderers will travel to Magic Park on August 30 to take on the Northern NSW NPL outfit. The Eagles booked their spot in the round of 16 when they defeated Far North Queensland 3-0.
The ageless McBreen bagged a goal in that match and the veteran centre forward said Edgeworth will be ready to do the unthinkable to their A-League opponents.
“We like to think so,” McBreen told FourFourTwo.
“We know that it's a tough ask but if you don't believe you can do it then there is no point in turning up. I'm sure Zaney (coach Damian Zane) will study the video and have us as prepared as best as possible.
“After our win in Queensland I spoke with the club president and said his perfect draw now would be Western Sydney, so we were very happy with the draw.
“Also from the players perspective it's a great opportunity for the guys to play in front of a large, boisterous crowd in the RBB which gives them a small taste of what football is like at the next level.
“Hopefully they can enjoy the occasion and show what they are capable of.”
A number of NPL clubs have already upset A-League sides in this year’s Cup, with both Adelaide United and Central Coast eliminated. McBreen, who was the man of the match in the Mariner’s 2013 A-League grand final win against Western Sydney, said the Eagles can join those ranks.
“I believe many of the NPL teams are much more tactically astute these days, which makes them a tougher proposition for A-League teams,” the 39-year old said.
“There are a lot of good young managers in the NPL these days which can only help improve the standard.”
Edgeworth have won back-to-back titles in the Northern NSW NPL and McBreen joined the club, which he played for as a junior, after leaving Hong Kong side South China last year.
The striker hopes the Wanderers’ notorious support to get behind their team in numbers Newcastle.
“For a club like Edgeworth this is a great night,” he said.
“Hopefully the RBB turn up in force to support WSW and also local football as nights like this can really help NPL clubs who don't have huge bankrolls behind them.”
