Melbourne City may sit in the third place but their season has been characterised by inconsistent results.

Their recent wins against Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets marked the side's first back-to-back victories together since round one and two.

Nevertheless, star striker Fornaroli, otherwise known as ‘El Tuna’ believes the Citizens performances on the park during this campaign have been the finest in the competition.

“We play the best football in the league and that is something to be proud of,” he said to FourFourTwo.

“We win the ball keep it, keep possession and attack and create a lot of chances. People want to be entertained and we are an entertaining team, always fighting, always trying to finds space and score goals.

“We continue to improve on this and we are a hard team to beat. We have so many good players like Fernando Brandan, Nicolas Colazo, Bruce Kamau, Nick Fitzgerald and Tim Cahill. Then we have Luke Brattan, Neil Kilkenny and Anthony Caceres in midfield.”

During the last A-League season, City scored an all-time record 63 goals.

But with a host of players leaving the club and new recruits coming in, City haven’t reached the same heights this campaign.

Even so, Fornaroli believes the Citizens have been producing similar performances throughout the 2016-17 season.

“There have been a few new players come in, but we are still playing the same attacking football, trying to win the ball, score lots of goals and attack a lot,” he said.

“Fernando Brandan, Nicolas Colazo, and Tim Cahill fit into our team very well and have all played a good role, helping to attack and score goals for the team.

“Unfortunately, Nico was injured at the start and now Fernando is injured, but they give us a lot of momentum, pace, crosses in attack and have a lot of strengths and ability.

"Tim of course everyone already knows. He is a great player, a great professional and a good person. He keeps on going and helps the team and gives us an extra lift.”

City’s campaign was also disrupted when a new coach arrived mid-season, however, Fornaroli denies that affected the club.

“Of course, it was difficult with John van’t Schip leaving,” he said.

“But Michael Valkanis is a very good coach and has worked very closely with JvS. The club has a great coaching staff who know what style we want to play as a team and Michael is a great fit.

“It hasn’t changed too much. We have a good squad, a lot of good players and depth in the squad, and coaching staff who know the right football and philosophy we want to play”
