Osieck selected 19 players who were all part of the Qantas Socceroos squad that recently defeated Thailand and Saudi Arabia in their opening two World Cup qualifiers.

But despite weeks of speculation neither of the returning Socceroo legends were included, freeing them up to star for their new clubs in the Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC clash.

Lucas Neill captains the side, while mainstays Mark Schwarzer, Brett Holman and Tim Cahill are also named. Dutch-based midfielder Adam Sarota gets his chance to improve on the one cap, but team-mate Tommy Oar misses selection as does Scott McDonald.

There are four East Asian-based players named, Josh Kennedy, Matt Spiranovic, Sasa Ognenovski and Alex Brosque, while the rest of the squad plays in Europe.

The Qantas Socceroos will assemble in Sydney early next week and will host an international friendly match against Malaysia in Canberra on Friday October 7.

This will be the first meeting between the Socceroos and Malaysia in Australia and the match will be used as a crucial build-up to the 2014 World Cup Qualifier against Oman at ANZ Stadium in Sydney four days later.

The match will be the seventh between the Socceroos and Malaysia with the six previous matches between the two countries played at venues in Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia.  The last time these two teams met was in 1992 when Malaysia defeated Australia 1-0 in Jakarta.

The Socceroos will then play Oman on Tuesday October 11.
