BRETT Emerton has welcomed the Socceroos' Next Gen - but won't hesitate to shove them aside and return to the national team for two crucial World Cup qualifiers next month.
Emerton, along with Socceroos mainstays Mark Schwarzer, Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill, sat out Australia's 5-0 friendly win over Malaysia last Friday and the routine 3-0 disposal of Oman that has Australia just a game away from securing a safe passage to the next stage of World Cup qualification.
The big four are all expected to be available for away trips to Oman (November 11) and Thailand (November 15), leaving coach Holger Osieck with a pleasant selection dilemma.
Emerton made it clear he is ready to make his return after being overlooked by Osieck last week due to a clash with the A-League opener.
Asked if we wanted in on the upcoming away games, the 89-cap veteran said on Thursday: "Yeah, definitely.
"It's two very important games. We can seal our qualification to the next round so we will take them very seriously.
"Hopefully we can do that in the first game away against Oman and that will give us some breathing space and time to let Holger experiment some more with the team."
Emerton watched the Oman game on television and acknowledges competition for spots in the Australian line-up is at an all-time high.
"Our national team is just getting stronger and stronger," he said. "We showed that with the strength and depth we have (despite) a number of players missing.
"The boys who stepped in (against Oman) did exceptional and things are looking good for the future. They have shown they are up to the task."
While he has one eye on an international return, Emerton's immediate focus is on his home debut for Sydney FC against Brisbane on Saturday night.
The former Premier League star was lured to the Sky Blues as much for his box office appeal as his football prowess.
The Sky Blues' crowds dropped off alarmingly last year, matching the club's slide down the table.
Emerton is comfortable playing the dual role of spruiker and marquee player.
"I hope people come out to watch me play. That's part of the reason why I'm at this football club," he declared. "I want to put on a good show but it's not all about me, it's about the team.
"If we play well and play entertaining football then hopefully they'll come back week in, week out."
Sydney are honing in on a club record run of 10 undefeated games but the Roar have set the benchmark a lot higher, going 29 matches since last tasting defeat.
''They've haven't gone (29) games unbeaten for no reason," Emerton said of the challenge. "They are a great footballing team.
"They have very good players on the ball and are very attack-minded. We're looking to stop their run but it's going to be tough and we're going to have to be our best."
