MARQUEE man Brett Emerton has high hopes for his inaugural A-League campaign after completing a solid debut for Sydney FC on Saturday.
The former Blackburn Rovers star made a strong first impression on the 3,577 fans who braved wet conditions to catch the first glimpse of their new superstar at WIN Jubilee Oval.
Emerton scored from the penalty spot early in the second half and was involved in several dangerous raids during his solid 54-minute hit-out in the 2-all draw with Perth Glory.
While the 32-year-old admits he's still getting to know his team-mates after meeting most of them for the first time on Monday, he's confident the Sky Blues will be a major force when the season proper gets underway next month.
"The first half an hour I thought the team performed quite well and then after conceding the goal I thought we got quite sloppy, but I thought all in all we gelled fairly well together and it was good to finally be out there and play my first game," Emerton said of his first club game on Australian soil in 11 years.
"We've got some good players in the team so I think there's encouraging signs and hopefully we'll look to do well this season.
"I think we've got enough talented and enough intelligent footballers out there to build an understanding pretty much straight away and I've seen in training already that we've gelled together quite well already.
"We'll continue to improve but I feel quite comfortable out there already."
Emerton said he had always planned to come off after 55 minutes in his first hit-out for the club but says he'll be ready to play the full 90 when the real action gets underway.
It is not yet known if the 32-year-old will be available for the season opener against Melbourne Victory on October 8 due to a scheduling clash with the Socceroos' friendly against Malaysia and the World Cup qualifier against Oman on October 11.
"I'll leave it up to Holger to make the decision," Emerton said.
"Obviously I'd love to play (for Sydney FC) if he allows me, but if not I'll accept the decision and obviously go and represent my country. That's an honour in itself so it's a win-win I suppose."
Emerton says it was 'good to get on the score sheet' after powering home a penalty attempt in the 49th minute, however he did blow a guilt-edged chance in the 19th minute.
"Nicky Carle crossed the ball and myself and the keeper got to the ball at roughly the same time and I just tried to force the ball in but unfortunately it didn't go in but (it bounced) off the post and Nicky finished it off," he recalled.
The veteran played at right midfield on Saturday but expects to be used in a variety of roles throughout the upcoming campaign.
"I played on the right today but I think I'm quite comfortable in numerous positions all over the park sop I'm sure as the season progresses you'll probably see me play in different roles within the team and in different systems as well," he said.
"I'm comfortable playing anywhere so wherever he wants me to play I'll do so."
