John Aloisi's first season with Sydney was regarded as a disappointing failure after the veteran Socceroo struggled in front of goal, sparking a boo boys backlash.
But the following season, he turned the poor run of form around to help steer Sydney to their first double-title winning run, before another successful stint at Melbourne Heart.
Now Emerton, 32, is determined not to let the pressure get to him, with the weight of expectation placed firmly on his shoulders since becoming Sydney's highest profile returning Socceroo star.
"You're going to go through good and bad periods I've experienced that throughout my career and I expect I will go through the same here in Sydney," he admitted at Sydney Football Stadium this morning.
"But I think I am old enough and wise enough when I'm not playing well to be confident in my own ability. Expectations will be high, there's no doubt about that.
"I'm prepared to carry those expectations."
He added: "I'm really excited about it and I feel really comfortable with my decision. Obviously it's something that I've been thinking about for quite a while.
"It's finally time for me to come home.
"I've enjoyed every minute of my time in England but really looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and excited to be here at Sydney FC."
The FFA are considering moving the opening Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC A-League blockbuster to allow both Emerton and Victory's new marquee star Harry Kewell to play for their new clubs and also for the Socceroos in the same week's World Cup qualifier against Oman.
Kewell may be an unlikely selection for the match - who is lacking match fitness after six months since his last competitive game - but match-sharp Emerton would be a first team choice.
However any change of date for the Big Blue could backfire on fans who have already booked flights and accomodation in Melbourne for the match.
The alternative though would be a clubs v country choice for Socceroos coach Holger Osieck who may be put under pressure by the FFA not to select his big name A-League stars.
"It's a tough choice to make but obviously that will be put in someone else's hands," said Emerton.
"Fortunately enough for me, because I'm desperate to play my first game for Sydney FC and you know how passionate I am about our national team as well, so we'll have to wait and see."
Emmo revealed he hadn't actually discussed the move with his Socceroos team-mate and now Big Blue rival Harry Kewell.
"I haven't spoken to Harry," he said. "As far as us coming back together at the same time is pure coincidence.
"It's fantastic for the game and generated a lot of interest in the league so that's what's most important.
"The competition has gradually got better year on year. Last year, the games I saw were of a very good standard - probably the best they've ever been."
And he said he saw no reason for the move to impact on his Socceroos career as he edges closer to the the century mark for caps - and the title of Australia's most capped Socceroo.
"Players have shown int he past - Jason Culina is one example, he's beenin the A-League for a number of years now and a consistent part of the Socceroos set-up," he said.
"And probably playing the best I've seen him playing for a long time. As far as selection is concerned it should always be basedon performance.
"As long as I'm here playing well for Sydney, I can't see a reason why I can't continue to play for the national team."
