THE lines between Olyroo and Socceroo have been blurred even more with a youthful line up named by Australia coach Pim Verbeek for the China clash at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.
Ruben Zadkovich, James Holland, James Troisi, Bruce Djite, Matt Spiranovic and Nikolai Topor Stanley will all start tomorrow.
And itching to get on the park will be bench warmers Stu Musialik, Neil Kilkenny and the exciting 20-year-old striker David Williams.
All these players are also part of Graham Arnold's squad for the Beijing Olympics. But as Pim Verbeek says, the next generation is pushing the current one for selection – and he couldn't be happier as his main stars are rested after a long season.
“That's the good thing when you bring in new players. Fresh energy, fresh legs. For them it's a great opportunity. They bring a new energy, you can see it in the training.
“The energy has been high. There was a great training session yesterday and today we save our legs for tomorrow."
The Socceroos had their final training session today at Parramatta stadium with a light session with Verbeek working on shape and shooting.
As for David Williams, Verbeek was quietly impressed: “He's doing well, he's fast, he has personality and that's the same with [Neil] Kilkenny.
“Again, these are players who have a great age because they can be part of the Socceroos for many years. And with James [Holland] I have absolutely no worries. I just want him to play free. He can go inside, outside.”
And Verbeek stressed the importance of two “controlling” midfielders, saying most international teams used this system.
“These days we've seen with the European championships how good sides are at counter attack. No team plays with just one controlling player. You cannot give space away in the centre of the park.”
But with nothing to play for except pride, the Socceroos will put on a show for the large crowd, said Verbeek.
“We don't give presents. We are going out to win the game."
