England and Colombia needed a penalty shoot out to decide the match after a bruising 120 minutes ended at 1-1.

England goal keeper Jordan Pickford was the hero for the Three Lions when he saved Carlos Bacca’s penalty to give Tottenham’s Eric Dier the chance to score the winning spot kick, which he did.

Harry Kane gave England the lead in the 57th minute with a penalty that he had earned himself, after Carlos Sanchez rugby-tackled the striker as a Kieran Trippier corner was swung in.

Colombia broke 53 million English hearts when Yerry Mina produced a towering leap above Harry Maguire to score a powerful header from a corner in the 93rd minute of play.

Prior to that, substitute Uribe produced a magnificent strike from over 25 yards that saw Jordan Pickford fly to his left to make a superb save in top corner of the goal with his finger tip.

England

Jordan Pickford – (GK) 7

Was mostly untroubled until Colombia scored in the 93rd minute. Did some nice sweeping work in extra time  when he made a vital clearance. Was the hero in the penatly shoot out with a maginifcent save from Bacca.

Kyle Walker - 5

Kept Colombia’s attack at bay and played the ball out well from the back but made an awful error when he lost the ball in the 81st minute and was lucky that Cuadrado blasted over.

John Stones - 6

A pretty solid display with some good defensive headers and ball distribution.

Harry Maguire - 6

Another strong, consistent performance from the defender until he was out-jumped by Mina in the 93rd minute for Colombia's equaliser.

Ashley Young - 6

A solid display by the right-wing back in attack and in defence. His best display for England at the World Cup so far.

Kieran Trippier - 6

Was a dangerous outlet down the right and made some desperate clearances late in the second half. Probably wishes he was taller when Mina’s header bounced over his head. Nice equalising penalty in the shootout.

Jordan Henderson 6

Was solid in the centre of midfield and made some key defensive stops but his play acting during that weak head butt by Barrios as Kane lined up for his free-kick wasn’t his best work. He will be remembered for missing England’s third penalty.

Jesse Lingard - 7

Wasn’t as influential as in the earlier games and gave away a needless yellow in the second half; but was still buzzing about and got on the end of some nice passes later in the game.

Dele Alli - 6

Was mostly a peripheral figure in the first half but got better in the second and produced a nice through ball for Lingard who sprinted into the box midway through the second.

Raheem Sterling - 7

Looked menacing early on but couldn’t get his combinations going as he was thwarted by Colombia’s defence but was involved in some excellent counter-attacking moves late in the second half.

Harry Kane - 7

Big Daddy Kane worked hard and came back into midfield to link up with his teammates and held his nerve for the penalty. His spot kick in the shootout was also clinical.

SUBS

Dier - 6

Not much of an impact when he came on for Delli. Had a great chance to score the winner in the 114th minute but couldn’t keep his open header down. Was the hero in the penalty shootout for England with the winning spot kick.

Vardy - 6

Didn’t do  much when he came on for Sterling. Was hardly viewed on the screen except in the second half of extra time when he had a great chance but missed and was eventually ruled offside.

Danny Rose - 6

A great run down the left in the 112th minute saw him produce a great cross but unfortunately no England teammates were in the box to meet it.

Marcus Rashford - 5

Came on late in extra time and scored England's third penalty in the shootout with confidence.

Colombia

David Ospina (GK) - 6

Wasn’t really troubled but went the wrong way when Kane took the penalty and almost saved Dier's penalty in the shootout.

Santiago Arias - 7

The right back made some nice runs down the wing and was decent in defence.

Yerry Mina - 7

Was a nuisance for England’s attackers and kept them at arms-length. Was involved in the niggle that was bubbling throughout the game. Produced an amazing leap to score the equaliser.

Davinson Sanchez - 6

The central defender was solid and made some vital stops and also distributed the ball out well from the back.

Johan Mojica - 6

Dealt with England’s attack down the right rather well and was the recipient of a Martin Tyler special in the 91st minute:  “is this the last of the Mojica crosses?” It wasn’t as he made a number of runs and decent crosses in extra time.

Wilmar Barrios - 6

The midfielder made some fine tackles but stupidly made a lame attempt at a headbutt on Henderson when a free-kick was being taken by Kane and got a yellow card.

Carlos Sanchez - 5

The defensive midfielder was a rock in the centre but gave away the penalty when he decided to rugby tackle Harry Kane at a corner.

Jefferson Lema - 6

The midfielder was busy but came off in the 61st minute soon after England scored.

Juan Quintero - 6

The attacking midfielder probed the England defence and had a decent try with his left foot in the first half but struggled to penetrate, even though he did look dangerous throughout.

Juan Cuadrado - 6

Was a constant threat but like his teammates was guilty of giving away dangerous free-kicks outside the box and wasted a great chance when Walker gave away possession. Redeemed himself with a great penalty in the shootout.

Radamel Falcao - 6

The striker rarely troubled the goal and was at boiling point midway through the second half as he spent a lot of energy arguing with the referee. Was still a focal point for Colombia’s attack and gave all for his country. Struck a superb opening penalty in the shootout.

SUBS

Bacca - 5

Gave away a stupid foul on John Stones when he came on and promptly received a yellow and missed the crucial fifth penalty in the shootout.

Uribe - 6

Didn’t do enough to warrant a fair rating until his amazing shot on goal in the 93rd minute led to Colombia’s equalising goal at the end of normal time. Missed Colombia’s fourth penalty.

Muriel - 5

Made a couple of attacking runs down the left in extra time and rolled his country’s third penalty with ease low into the far corner.
