Manchester City responded to their shock defeat to Cardiff in the best way possible with a 2-0 win over Hull while Crystal Palace enjoyed their first victory of the new season in the Premier League last night.
Alvaro Negredo and Yaya Toure were the heroes for City as they both scored second-half goals to ease Manuel Pellegrini’s men past the Tigers.
Negredo – who was introduced at the break for Edin Dzeko – nodded in Pablo Zabaleta's cross in the 65th minute, before Toure struck a late free-kick to seal victory.
Hull enjoyed the better of the first half, with Sone Aluko and Robert Koren going close, while Danny Graham had an effort ruled out for offside, but City did enough at Etihad Stadium to claim the win.
Dwight Gayle's late penalty earned Crystal Palace a 3-1 victory over 10-man Sunderland to give them their first points of the season.
The striker was brought down by John O'Shea, who was subsequently dismissed, in the 78th minute and converted from the spot for his first Palace goal.
Steven Fletcher had drawn Sunderland level on 64 minutes with his header cancelling out Danny Gabbidon's early goal.
However Gayle’s penalty and a late strike by substitute Stuart O'Keefe secured all three points for the newly promoted side.
In the day’s other matches, Jermaine Pennant came off the bench to score a late free-kick as Stoke beat West Ham 1-0, Hatem Ben Arfa struck with five minutes left as Newcastle overcame Fulham 1-0, Norwich edged out Southampton by the same scoreline while Cardiff and Everton played out a dour 0-0 draw.
