Miroslav Klose's early dismissal proved costly as Werder Bremen were condemned them to a heavy aggregate (1-5) defeat that sent Espanyol into the UEFA Cup final to face holders Sevilla.
Klose received his marching orders for two bookable offences shortly after Miguel Hugo Almeida had given Werder a glimmer of hope.
Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, the order was too tall for Bremen after the Germany striker's red card, and they were caught out by second-half goals from Ferran Coro and Jesus Lacruz.
The home side looked fired up, but the spirit of the occasion became a little too much for Klose inside the game's opening minute.
He received a booking after just 52 seconds for remonstrating with referee Bertrand Layec following a foul on David Garcia.
It appeared that Bremen could have been on their way to a fightback against the odds when Miguel Hugo Almeida gave them the perfect start in just the fourth minute.
The striker's opener was one of quality when, having picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and spotting goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz slightly off his line, he lofted the ball home.
Their early efforts were badly undermined, however, in the 19th minute when Klose received his second yellow card for an embarrassing simulated dive and was ordered to leave the field.
The Spanish visitors had been deliberately unadventurous and mid-way through the half Pablo Zabaleta's 25-yard effort trickled past the upright without troubling Andreas Reinke in the Bremen goal.
Aaron Hunt was having to work much harder, with the loss of strike partner Klose, and he found chances hard to come by.
Petri Pasanen spurned an opportunity when he connected with Ribas Diego's corner, but sent his header wide, before Almeida dragged another attempt past the wrong side of the post.
Bremen continued to put pressure on Espanyol and Iraizoz was brought into action five minutes before the break, when Daniel Jensen sent a fizzing volley in on goal from just inside the area.
The man disadvantage was proving too much of a handicap for the hosts and the deficit was made near insurmountable five minutes after the restart when Ferran Coro equalised.
The midfield man was first to react to Albert Riera's right-sided ball and was on hand to convert emphatically after steaming into the box.
Bremen's fate was confirmed in the 60th minute when Fernandez Luis Garcia's far-post corner was nodded in by Lacruz into the bottom-right corner, to make the score 5-1 on aggregate.
As the game fizzled out, Espanyol looked the only team likely to score again and Luis Garcia almost grabbed a third, only to see his shot blocked at the last moment by Pasanen.
Espanyol will now constest an all-Spanish final with Sevilla at Hampden Park on May 16.
