Wong, whose parents are Chinese, scored 31 goals in 16 games for England League One club Chesterfied FC's youth development side before making the switch.

Mundo Deportivo reported the 18-year-old has been on trial since October 4 and passed a medical on Thursday. He will line up for Espanyol B, the reserve team, based in Barcelona.

It is understood the striker will fill the position left by Marc Gual who has been picked up by Sevilla Atletico.

Wong is hoping to be playing in La Liga by the start of 2017.

He said on his instagram account: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank RCD Espanyol and all The Staff involved including my Agent Dennis Bingham for believing in me and offering me a 4 year Professional contract, aiming me to the first team at the beginning of 2017.

"This is a magnificent achievement but it has come from dedication and hard work and people that have supported me and this is the beginning of a long journey ahead. Also this all would not be possible if not for the friends that helped me make my first steps into Europe."
