When the sides clashed in the 2004/05 campaign at the Stadio Olimpico, Swedish referee Anders Frisk was hit by a coin thrown from the stands as he walked off at half-time.

Dynamo, who were leading 1-0, were awarded a 3-0 victory by UEFA while the Giallorossi were banned from having spectators at two of their subsequent Champions League games.

There were no such troubles for the Italians on or off the pitch this time as goals from Simone Perrotta and Francesco Totti ensured they got their Group F campaign off to a winning start.

Perrotta put the hosts ahead after nine minutes and captain Totti got the second with 20 minutes to go.

Perrotta's goal came from Roma's first attack.

Max Tonetto whipped over a left-wing cross and Perrotta glanced a header past Olexandr Shovkovskiy for only his second Champions League goal.

Dynamo, who won the Ukrainian double last season, were wobbling and only a fine save from Shovkovskiy prevented Marco Cassetti from making it 2-0 to the hosts.

The overworked Shovkovskiy made another save after 21 minutes, keeping out an effort from the impressive Tonetto.

Dynamo finally emerged as an attacking threat midway through the first half with Ismael Bangoura having a shot blocked while da Silva Michael also came close five minutes later.

The chances served as a wake-up call for the Giallorossi who almost made it 2-0 after 28 minutes when Juan's close-range shot struck the post.

Totti was next to try his luck but his 30-yard free-kick was saved by Shovkovskiy.

The start of the second half saw the introduction of Diogo Rincon for Bangoura and he almost made an immediate impact, heading Oleg Gusev's corner just wide of the upright.

Brazilian winger Alessandro Mancini, so often Roma's attacking inspiration, had had a relatively quiet first half but he came close to making it 2-0 after 49 minutes, drilling in a right-foot shot which brought a scrambling save out of Shovkovskiy.

Roma continued to dominate possession and Philippe Mexes' acrobatic effort was their next opportunity.

Totti's free-kick was seized upon by the France international but his overhead kick was comfortable for Shovkovskiy.

The Ukraine international was next tested by substitute Ludovic Giuly after 69 minutes.

The pressure eventually told shortly afterwards when Perrotta, having won the ball in midfield, picked out Totti and the experienced playmaker found the bottom left-hand corner from 12 yards.

Dynamo heads failed to drop, however, and only a fine save from home keeper Alexander Doni prevented Marjan Markovic from setting up a tense finale.
