In Turkey Harry Kewell came off the bench in the second half of Galatasaray's 3-2 win over Gaziantepspor.

James Troisi started for Kayserispor against his old club Genclerbirligi but his former team-mate and compatriot Bruce Djite wasn't in the Genclerbirligi squad while Mile Jedinak was an injury time substitute in the 0-0 draw.

Socceroos goalkeeper Ante Covic saw three go past him at Elfsborg in the Swedish Allsvenskanliga as his team went down 3-2 to Gefle IF.

Scott Chipperfield came on in the second half for FC Basel against FC Zurich. Zurich appeared to score the winner in the 87th minute only for Basel to tie the game at 1-1 two minutes later.

Brett Holman played 65 minutes for reigning Dutch Eredivisie champions AZ Alkmaar in their 2-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam.

Nikita Rukavytsya came on in the 87th minute in FC Twente's 1-1 draw with Jason Culina's former club PSV Eindhoven.

Rhys Williams played the full 90 while Brad Jones benched it for Middlesbrough's opening game of the English Championship in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield United.

Williams has four goals from four pre-season games but shot wide of the post on Friday night. Jones is out with an ankle injury and will have to battle Danny Coyne for the goalkeeper's slot when he returns. David Carney was absent from the Sheffield squad.

Nick Carle benched it for Crystal Palace's 1-1 draw with Plymouth Argyle and will be looking forward to some game time for the Socceroos on Wednesday with a chance to impress his club manager.

Adam Federici is back at first choice goalkeeper for Reading since Marcus Hahnemann's departure over the summer.

Federici almost fluffed it against Nottingham Forest though when he sent a goal kick straight to Forest's Dele Adebola but recovered well to save the shot from David McGoldrick. The match finished 0-0.

In League One, Neil Kilkenny was out with an injured ankle for Leeds opening game against Exeter City while Patrick Kisnorbo played the full shift of his first game for the club which they won 2-1.

Michael Theoklitos had a nightmare debut for Norwich City with two mistakes leading to the first two goals for Colchester. Theoklitos then had to scoop the ball from the back of the net another five times as Norwich lost 7-1.
