Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans is backing Rafael Benitez`s side to end Chelsea`s long unbeaten home record this weekend - even though he also feels the Reds have still to hit top gear this season.
Sunday`s clash at Stamford Bridge pits the top two teams in the Barclays Premier League against each other, with both Chelsea and Liverpool having taken 20 points from their opening eight games.
Liverpool have been in fine form both domestically and in Europe recently, and they extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches with last night`s 1-1 Champions League draw against Atletico Madrid.
When it comes to unbeaten streaks though Chelsea`s takes some beating, with the Blues not having a lost a league match at home in 86 fixtures.
Despite that, Bootle-born Evans, who managed Liverpool from 1994 to 1998 and is now an assistant to John Toshack with Wales, believes his old club can be the ones to end that run this weekend, even if he feels they are not yet firing an all cylinders.
"Somebody`s got to do it sometime and although Liverpool have not been playing at their very best they`ve been getting some really good results," Evans told PA Sport.
"What they have shown this year, and perhaps not in previous years, is a real spirit.
"If they go behind they`ve come back and won games, for example recently against Wigan and Man City, and they`ve also shown they can beat the top teams by beating Man United, which over the last few years they haven`t done.
"Chelsea, down at Stamford Bridge, is a difficult game, they are playing some great stuff but I just feel that if Liverpool go down there and play at their very best can come away with a result."
He added: "I think it will be 2-1 to Liverpool, although I am slightly biased!"
"It will be difficult game and Chelsea, even with their injuries, have looked a very good side so I don`t think it will be a walkover by any means, but I think Liverpool can come away with a positive result."
Chelsea have been badly hit with injuries, and although coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was able to welcome back Petr Cech and Ricardo Carvalho following injuries for last night`s Champions League game against Roma, the likes of Joe Cole, Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole and Michael Ballack were all missing.
Liverpool also have injury concerns, though, with the most obvious example being striker Fernando Torres, who is recovering from yet another hamstring problem picked up while on international duty with Spain last week.
"It`s a massive loss, he`s a top striker," admitted Evans.
"He was magnificent last year and this year he has come back from internationals with a couple of hamstring problems.
"That`s a concern for Rafa and you`d want to know what they (the Spanish national team) are doing differently in terms of training sessions for him to come back twice with hamstring problems."
However, Evans believes Liverpool have the ability in their squad to cope with Torres` absence.
Robbie Keane would be first in line to fill the Spaniard's boots up front after scoring in Madrid, but he is an injury doubt himself after failing to finish Wednesday's match due to a groin complaint.
If he does play, Evans has backed the Irishman to make an impression.
"Obviously clubs have very big squads these days," said Evans.
"There`s Robbie Keane who has come into his own and he`s starting to get goals now to add to his work-rate and his enthusiasm.
"I think he`s still just about settling in. I think he gives them a great tempo, he gives them great enthusiasm and when you haven`t got the ball he`s great at closing people down.
"But I still think there`s a lot more to come from him on the football side.
"Dirk Kuyt is threatening to score goals as well, so they`ve certainly got replacements.
"When your top players are out, such as the likes of Torres, it`s a blow but I`m sure Chelsea can say the same thing."
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who was brought off with fatigue, and Xabi Alonso (knee) are other injury doubts following last night`s encounter.
Alongside Keane, both were substituted in the second half against Atletico, but Evans hopes it will be nothing serious.
"They all seemed okay. Robbie Keane said after the match he is hoping to be okay, and he seems to be the biggest niggle with his groin, so hopefully they'll all be fit," he added.
