World Cup history was made when the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) awarded a penalty after it was adjudged that Josh Risdon fouled Antoine Greizmann in the box.

The game originally kept flowing, until Cunha called for a stoppage and Griezmann subsequently converted the penalty.

The Roos boss said he had not seen the replay, but questioned the confidence of the Uruguayan referee.

“I hope that maybe one time there’ll be a referee that’s very honest,” van Marwijk said post-match.

“In that moment, going to the screen, I saw him standing there, the body language showed he didn’t know, and then he had to make a decision between France or Australia. I got a lot of reactions.

“It’s very difficult for a referee with 50,000 people behind him and he’s doubtful.

“I think he was standing very close to the moment. He directly said ‘no penalty’ and ‘go on’. For me he’s also a human being, so everyone makes mistakes.”

Van Marwijk is also holding his head up high as the scores were level until the 80th minute, when Paul Pogba scored the winner in a fortuitous fashion.

The Dutchman said the Socceroos deserved to draw.

“I’m proud and disappointed, I think we gave a good performance. No one expected we could play like this against France,” he said.

“There were a lot of moments they didn’t know what to do anymore. The players of France said it themselves, so it’s a big compliment for us.

“You get a lucky goal against you just before the end. The moment before Pogba scored, [Tomi] Juric got to the goal and it was a situation three against one, they kicked him from behind and one minute later, we lost the game.

“I’m very disappointed, we played the way we wanted to play for 95% of the game. I can’t blame any of the players.”
