Western Sydney Wanderers will be presented with the Premier’s Plate in front of a sell-out home crowd at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday night if they defeat Sydney FC in the highly anticipated derby.
Football Federation Australia told au.fourfour.two.com that CEO David Gallop is likely to make the presentation should the A-League new boys walk away with all three points.
A win would see Tony Popovic’s men cross the line with a round in hand, beating out reigning Premiers Central Coast Mariners for the coveted season honours. A loss or draw would leave Graham Arnold’s men with a slim chance of retaining the crown.
With two rounds remaining the Wanderers are sitting comfortably on 53 points to Mariners 48 but the Gosford outfit has a +6 goal difference on their Sydney counterparts.
If Wanderers lift the plate in the penultimate round it will also stretch their record-breaking winning streak to 11 games. In all, a remarkable story for a club that announced its first player signings less than four months before the season start.
On the eve of the derby blockbuster comes the news that inspirational marquee Shinji Ono has also signed up for another 12 months.
But Sydney FC won’t walk tamely into the lions den. With still so much to play for, the foundation club will be looking to gate-crash the red and black party on the weekend.
Derby honours are one a piece, and the fifth-placed Sky Blues are desperate to lock in a spot in the playoffs and salvage something from what has been a disappointing campaign.
