Hart was sacked today with Portsmouth at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League, after taking only seven points from 13 matches.

There have been reports that Grant is keen to stay as director of football, the position to which he was appointed only last month.

In his first behind-the-scenes spell at Portsmouth, Grant was technical director while Redknapp managed the team, and the Tottenham boss believes the Israeli would make an ideal replacement for Hart.

"Avram's there and he worked with me there. He's managed Chelsea," Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

"I'd be surprised if he didn't end up taking it.

"It's a good opportunity for him to get back into management.

"But I don't know, only he'd know what he wants to do.

"He would be my choice if anyone was to take it."

Redknapp appointed Hart to his backroom staff during his own second stint in charge at Fratton Park, and was disheartened to learn his former colleague had lost his job.

"I was disappointed to hear that," Redknapp said.

"He did a great job under difficult circumstances.

"It's sad to see him lose his job."

Hart saw key players leave Portsmouth during his spell in charge, and he had to operate on a tight budget when recruiting replacements.

"It's been tough for him," Redknapp said.

"I've been impressed with the way Portsmouth have played. They played against us the other week and played ever so well.

"They missed a penalty on Sunday at Stoke and if they'd scored the penalty there was every chance they'd have gone on to win the game.

"There's nothing as a manager you can do about that - you can't take the penalty and score a goal.

"His job has hinged probably on that penalty miss on Sunday."

Redknapp expects Portsmouth to get out of trouble under their next manager.

"I just wish the club well," he added.

"Whoever they appoint I hope they get it right and the club can get off the bottom of the table.

"I'm sure they will, I'm sure they'll stay up."
