Rangers skipper David Weir questioned the point of UEFA using extra officials after the Ibrox club were denied what looked a blatant penalty in their Europa League last-16 defeat by PSV Eindhoven at Ibrox last night.
Jeremain Lens netted the only goal of the tie in the 14th minute as the Dutch side went on to win 1-0 both on the night and on aggregate.
However, the outcome might have been different had a spot-kick been awarded in the second half when Light Blues defender Kyle Bartley's header appeared to be handled on the line by PSV midfielder Atiba Hutchinson.
But remarkably the incident was missed by the referee, his assistant and the extra official behind the line.
Afterwards Rangers boss Walter Smith said: "I don't know how many officials we have got on the pitch but they all missed it."
Weir added: "You would think there would be enough people there to see something like that.
"That's the whole point of having them there.
"But you can't change it. That's their job - not ours."
Asked if the incident proved additional officials add nothing to the game, the former Everton and Hearts defender said: "It did on this occasion. Obviously it didn't work but that's up to UEFA to decide, I suppose.
"The goal changed the complexion of the game and we were chasing the ball.
"But in the second half I thought we were the better team and had good chances but unfortunately we didn't get the break."
Weir was substituted at the interval as Steven Naismith came on to give the Ibrox side more of a goal threat and, although the bold move failed to pay off, it was a more positive performance from the Scottish champions in the second half.
But the 40-year-old had no qualms with Smith's decision.
"That's life," he said. "It's not about individuals or personal battles.
"It's about Rangers winning the game and the manager felt that was the best way to win the game."
Weir is looking forward to making amends in Sunday's Co-operative Insurance Cup final against Celtic at Hampden.
"Rangers are all about winning trophies and we have a chance on Sunday," he said.
"A cup final is good at any time and they are the games you want to play in and we will try to erase this memory on Sunday."
