The Football Association have rejected reports they have entered discussions aimed at revising the old Home Internationals should England and Scotland fail to qualify for next summer's European Championships.
Both nations could still reach Austria and Switzerland next summer. But while Scotland's fate remains in their own hands, needing a win over Italy at Hampden Park on Saturday to get through, England are reliant on Israel doing them a favour against Russia on the same day.
The possibility of both countries missing out, and the financial implications that would mean for the FA in particular, has seen suggestions of a one-off resumption of the old British championship, which was last played in 1984.
The idea is likely to prove attractive to both Wales and Northern Ireland, the latter being the defending champions, who have both played England in major qualifying matches in recent times.
However, an FA spokesman has stressed there have been no talks and no plans are in place for alternative matches next summer, with the focus remaining totally on England's bid to reach Euro 2008.
"There have been no talks and there are no plans," said the spokesman.
"At this moment England and Scotland can still reach the European Championships and we are not thinking about any other possibility."
