FORMER Brisbane Roar coach Frank Farina is suing his old club for $325,000 for sacking him and allegedly destroying his chances of ever working as a football coach again.
Farina claims the parent companies of Roar terminated his contract in a way that "...significantly damaged his reputation as a football coach", according to documents lodged in the Supreme Court in Brisbane.
The former Socceroo was dismissed by the club after he was charged with drink diriving for a second time. He was fined $500 at Brisbane Magistrates Court in November after admitting driving with a blood alcohol limit of 0.120 on October 2.
According to the documents filed, Farina only found out he had been sacked through a press conference with club chairman Chris Bombolas on October 14.
But the axe fell after a series of meetings between Farina and the board, including one four days before his dismissal where Farina claims Bombolas toldĀ him: "There were people in high places in the Football Federation Australia that don't like you."
At another meeting two days later, one board member allegedly said: "It was a mistake any of us could have made ... we have probably all done it."
The former Socceroo and national coach is now suing Roar to pay out his contract from October 14 to February 28, 2011, including $276,123.90 in gross salary, $24,851.15 in superannuation, $25,000 for the potential loss of the premiership bonus and all mobile phone expenses.
Farina also claims the club have damaged his reputation domestically and internationally which has wrecked his chance of finding another similar job, and wants compensation for the loss of potential future income.
Court documents add: "Bombolas made public statements which were calculated to, and did, have the effect of causing statements to be widely published in the Australian and international media to the effect that the plaintiff misconducted himself in his employment.
"The plaintiff has a significantly diminished prospect of gaining employment as a football coach in Australia and internationally."
No date has been set for a court hearing.
