THE quarter-finals of the AFC Cup get under way tomorrow as 2009 finalists Al Karamah host Muang Thong at Khaled Ibn Al Waleed stadium and coach Mohammad Kwid knows his side must avoid complacency against the Thais.
The Syrians boast a wealth of experience in Asian competitions having reached the final of the AFC Champions League four years ago and then just missing out on the AFC Cup title to Al Kuwait last year.
They are looking good to reach the final once again this time but Muang Thong proved they are no pushovers with a victory over Qataris Al Rayyan in the last 16 and Kwid has warned his players not to be overconfident for the match.
"Everyone is nominating us to have a good result but this is not a healthy situation," said the 54-year-old coach. "We should not be overestimated in the game as this could have a negative affect on us.
Muang Thong coach Rene Desaeyere is hopeful his side can secure a positive result to give them the best possible chance in the return leg next week.
"We were drawn in the hardest possible situation against a team who have big experience and good history in the Asian competitions," said the 62-year-old coach.
"I'm looking forward to getting the best possible result which is to win the game. However, we respect our opponents and we will try our best to avoid a bad result which could cost us everything."
Also in action are Thai Port as they host Al Qadsia at Supachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok and coach Sasom Pobprasert knows victory will be crucial for his side if they are to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the last four.
"We are sure that if the players stick to the game plan we can pull off a victory at home that will give us an advantage in the second leg," he said.
Goran Matkovic takes charge in the AFC Cup for the first time tomorrow after the Serbian was recently promoted from assistant manager to coach at Al Qadsia and he is confident his players will give their all to get the right result.
"I have a team who I worked with and helped to develop in the past as an assistant and now as manager," he said. "My team play as a group, not just as individuals and I know the right players will rise to the occasion."
Finally, Al Riffa host Vietnam side Da Nang at Bahrain National stadium and coach Jose Garrido is delighted with how preparations for the match have gone so far.
The hosts' domestic season does not start until next month but they have been keeping the fitness of the players high by playing in a number of friendlies.
"We are ready for the game and we have big desire to win the match against Da Nang," said Garrido.
"The players are going through a good period mentally and physically and they are determined to win the game."
Da Nang coach Le Huynh Duc, meanwhile, admitted he would be happy with a point from the game.
The Vietnamese side are without suspended Argentinean striker Merlo Sebastian Gaston as well as several key players who are either injured or on international duty with Vietnam.
"Our team is going through a tough period as we have lost some of our key players due to injuries while other players were called to play for Vietnam national team," said Duc.
"Hopefully we can get a draw from the match on Tuesday because this will be an impressive result for us."
