FAWKNER and Coburg United played out a scrappy 0-0 draw at CB Smith Reserve.
It left the home side still second from the bottom of the Foxtel Cup table and the visitors only a couple of points themselves from the relegation zone.
Fawkner had an opportunity to take an early lead when they were awarded a penalty in only the second minute of play.
The penalty was awarded for an innocuous looking handball in the area by Sime Kovacevic as he looked to play it back to his 'keeper.
Fortunately for the visitors, Coburg's 'keeper Adam Hrehoresin was up to the task and got down to his left to save the Fikret Husanovic spot kick much to the dismay of the home support.
Most of the play in the first half took place in the threadbare midfield of CB Smith Reserve without either team creating any real threat on their opposing goal.
Early in the second half both teams looked to change things up with a number of subsitutions with Fawkner's Jason Principato and an ineffective Husanovic being replaced by Michael Bosevski and Dejan Radojicic respectively.
For their part, the visitors replaced Nicholas Harrhy with Alex Josifovski.
After the substitutions, the visitors started to exert some influence on the game and kept the home side in their own half for long periods of time.
Both Andy Vlahos and Ross Thompson were both guilty of wasting good opportunities to put Coburg on the scoreboard.
Midway through the half Vlahos had an excellent opportunity to score as he got on the end of an excellent Josifovski cross, but his stooping header hit the side netting.
Not long after Fawkner had their best chance of the half as Zia Younan hit the upright from just outside the area as a weak clearance from Coburg 'keeper Hrehoresin fell at his feet.
At this stage it was end-to-end play as both teams sought to break the deadlock with the visitors creating the bulk of the chances, but Pasi Schwalger in the Blues' goal was up to the task.
In the end, both sets of fans and their respective teams left disappointed especially those from Fawkner who were probably still ruing that early penalty miss.
Next week, Fawkner takes on South Melbourne at Bob Jane Stadium and Coburg host Altona Magic at Knights Stadium.
