The 25-year-old uncapped Socceroo has emerged as Australia's number two goalkeeper behind Mark Schwarzer, after a superb season in the English Championship with improvers Reading.

Federici, who was recently linked with the Italian national team, insists with a long Championship campaign about to come to a close, he's focused on getting to the World Cup.

"Obviously I'd like to get in the starting line-up, and although I'd never want anyone to get injured, if someone did have to pull out then perhaps they'd look to me," he told Reading's official website.

"You never know though, I think being involved is the main priority for me and that's what I'll be working to."

He continued: "I'm still doing my extra training and I'll be in next week when everyone's off, I want to keep myself fit for when I go into camp.

"It'll be hard work but that's the way I like it because I'll be ahead of everyone next season."

Federici continued a potential Round of 16 clash with England at the World Cup is on his radar.

"It's been spotted that we could end up playing England in the second round and that's been talked about by the boys," he said.

"A lot of the boys at Reading are writing us off and saying we won't get through the group, but I'm confident we'll do well!

"There's always a good chance we could come up against England and the old Ashes rivalry would come up again. What a fantastic game that would be, I do believe the last time we played each other it was 3-1 to Australia so you never know!"

Speaking to the Bracknell Forest Standard, Federici continued this season at Reading has helped him improve his game.

"I'm still learning and have a long way to go," he said. "I feel with every game I play I learn a lot more.

"I think I'm ahead of where I wanted to be and I think it's been a great season for myself as well as a lot of other players.

"I think I've had a good year and it's been pretty consistent overall."

Federici added he felt the Royals, who struggled early in the campaign before a big improvement in the new year, could challenge for a return to the Premiership next season.

"I think if we keep the team that have been playing these last couple of months then it will be fantastic rolling into next season," he said. "It would be a strong team and hard to stop."
