ANU FC became the first team to make the Federation Cup Final with a pulsating 5-3 demolition upset of Canberra Olympic at the Tradies Hawker Enclosed on Saturday.
ANU FC will now play in their first Federation Cup Final since 1981, where ironically they lost to the then Downer Olympic on penalties.
Leading 4-0 at half time, ANU strikers Ari Jerrems and Alex Dalgleish combined well to score two each with Dalgleish scoring after just 20 seconds. Canberra Olympic threw everything at the students in the second half, but ANU did enough to hold them out.
In the other semi-final Canberra FC was 2-1 down to Tuggeranong United but displayed intelligent qualities by eventually winning 3-2 with two goals for Paul Ivanic.
Canberra FC has won the competition eight times since the Federation Cup began in 1962 and is the reigning champions.
The Men’s Final (ANU FC v Canberra FC) will take place at the McKellar Soccer Centre at 8.30pm tomorrow night (April 4).
Women's Federation Cup
In the Women’s Federation Cup Semi Finals on Sunday, Belwest took on Belconnen United in the north side derby and were always ahead.
During the second half Belconnen looked likely to equalise but Belwest put that option out of the question scoring their third in the last 10 minutes to make it 3-1.
In the middle valley derby, favourites Weston Creek held out Woden Valley in a tough match. With the game scoreless at half-time, Weston Creek scored their first in the second half which was very quickly followed by an equaliser from Woden’s Stacey Close.
Weston Creek’s Megan Kehoe then stepped up to get the winner, her second goal, late in the match and secure their spot in the final.
The Women’s Final (Belwest v Weston Creek) will take place at the McKellar Soccer Centre at 6pm tomorrow night (April 4).
