ADAM Federici may not have been involved with the Socceroos since September but says he's hopeful of playing for Australia in mid-year as he bids to become Mark Schwarzer's successor.
Federici, who opted to miss the 2011 Asian Cup to focus on club duties, returned to first-team training with his Championship side Reading this week after a knee ligament injury which kept him out of the Australia squad to face Germany.
The 26-year-old gloveman hasn't been involved with the Socceroos since friendlies against Switzerland and Poland last September, and he told the Bracknell Forest Standard missing out on the upcoming Germany friendly was frustrating.
“I would have been involved so it’s pretty tough for me to miss out on that,” Federici said.
"I’ve spoken to the coaches and they just want me fit as quickly as possible for the next squad.
“There’s a few games in the summer, so I’ll hopefully play in those.”
Federici, who has played 34 games for Reading this season and kept nine clean sheets, faces a battle to re-claim his number one shirt with the Royals after some impressive performances by Alex McCarthy in his absence.
“I never expect to play every week,” the three-time Socceroo said. “I always give my all in training every day and I go out to prove a point as to why I should be playing. I don’t take anything for granted.
“I’ve come a long way in what I hope will be a long career, this injury has just been a little blip.
"It’s a difficult decision to make between Alex and me, but thankfully it’s not down to me.
“I took the decision last summer after the World Cup to not take a holiday and I knew this season would always be tough on my body.”
