Football Federation Australia (FFA) has backed Network Ten’s inclusion of advertisements during game play of its coverage of the 2017/18 A-League season.
Network Ten’s secondary channel – ONE- has now aired two Saturday night games on free-to-air TV this season in its new deal with Fox Sports.
Commercials have been aired during substitutions with many fans venting their frustrations on social media.
The commercial network told FourFourTwo after its coverage of the Big Blue that ad breaks during football was consistent with all sports on free-to-air TV.
FFA also defended the ad strategy and maintained its full support of Network Ten.
“It is not unusual for ads to be shown during breaks in play as part of sports coverage on commercial television,” an FFA spokesperson told FourFourTwo.
“It’s the first time the Hyundai A-League has been shown live on commercial free-to-air television.
“FFA is delighted to be bringing the Hyundai A-League to a new audience live on Saturday nights via Network Ten. We believe this will help to grow our game in Australia.”
Network Ten has arguably aired the biggest games so far with Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC in Round 1, Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne City in Round 2 and now this weekend’s Sydney Derby at Allianz Stadium.
FourFourTwo also contacted FIFA but they did not respond to questions on this issue.
